[1] A Village in England - July, 2089 AD
 Distressed by the change in his friend Jack
 after Capping, Will is told by Ozymandius of
 the Freemen and encouraged to join them.
 His antagonistic cousin Henry discovers his
 plans, but Will tells him everything and they
 leave Wherton together.

 [2] England - July, 2089 A.D
 Ozymandius and the boys are pursued by
 villagers.  Ozymandius provides a diversion,
 and the others, believing him dead, proceed
 to Rimney.  Searching for Captain Curtis,
 they are shanghaied by sailors.

 [3] The English Channel - July, 2089 AD
 Aboard the Orion, Curtis reveals
 his mercenary character.  A run-in with
 Black Guards prompts the boys to jump ship.
 Captured by locals, they are freed by a
 local boy, Jean-Paul (Beanpole).

 [4] France - July, 2089 AD
 Investigating the ruins of the great-city
 Paris, the boys are forced to flee by hostile
 Vagrants.  Will, injured and feverish, is
 found by the Duc de Sarlat.

 [5] Château Ricordeau, France - July 2089 AD
 Will recovers at the Château Ricordeau,
 treated as one of the family.  The others are
 less welcome.  The boys' plans to leave are
 disrupted by Will's attachment to the Comte 
 Ricordeau's daughter Eloise, whom he 
 rescues from drowning.

 [6] Château Ricordeau, France - July 2089 AD
 The family wish Will to stay and marry
 Eloise.  Henry and Beanpole leave.  Sarlat
 is suspicious of Will, and rightly so; Will
 plans to follow with Eloise, but discovers
 just in time that she is Capped.

 [7] Château Ricordeau, France - August 2089 AD
 Will decides that he will stay with Eloise
 despite everything, and their engagement
 is announced.  However Sarlat chooses her
 as Queen of the Tournament and she is
 taken away to the City of Gold.

 [8] Château Ricordeau, France - August 2089 AD
 Distraught, Will leaves the Château and
 follows the others. He is intercepted by a
 Tripod, but wakes unCapped.  Catching
 up with the others, the boys discover
 he has been implanted with a tracking
 device, and has been followed.

 [9] France - September, 2089 AD
 Beanpole removes the implant and the boys
 use it to decoy the Tripod.  Will is
 taken to the vineyard of the Vichot
 family, who make the boys welcome in
 return for labour.  However the boys are
 wary of the eldest Vichot girl's beau
 Daniel, who is a Black Guard.

 [10] France - September, 2089 AD
 The unusually free-willed Madame Vichot
 agrees to help the boys in their journey,
 and helps Will come to terms with his
 grief over Eloise. Although it is hard for
 Henry to leave the vineyard, the boys must
 move on.  Unknown to them, Daniel follows.

 [11] France - October, 2089 AD
 Starving, the boys steal food from a
 village fête and escape into the clutches
 of mad Tripod-worshipping Vagrants.  They
 are forced to flee for their lives and
 are put on trial for theft.

 [12] France - October, 2089 AD
 Proceedings are interrupted by Daniel,
 who accuses the boys of subversion and
 deceit.  He is to take them to Dijon for
 trial, but they escape. Trapped at the foot
 of the mountains, the boys attack and kill
 a Tripod. However the fight attracts armed
 and dangerous Tripods to their location.

 [13] The White Mountains - November, 2089 AD
 The boys survive a terrifying night of
 pursuit, only to be found by crossbowmen
 and Black Guards.  They are held captive
 and interrogated as to the purpose of their
 journey. Eventually the boys are taken to
 the home of the Freemen, and we learn of
 Julius' plans to attack the City of Gold.
