There's an ad in The Job, this week.  Hendon's looking
for people with time in.  Not heroes; sloggers, terriers, the
fillers of files and cells.  The ones nobody remembers.

Tom answers every question on the form, carefully.  Checks his dates
and his tone and talks to Reg about it all.  They share an interest
in winter bulbs, and several nights a long, long time ago they never
mention.  Tom misses the uniform, the tiny crimes, the tea with grateful
pensioners. Reg loves them still.  He still believes.

Next morning, it rains.

Tom leaves silently, smiling as he posts the letter.
