Errol calls Nicky his sundog, among other things.  "My spot
in the halo, boy", he says; "if we have none, we can't
possibly be real".

Georgina thinks it's sweet.  Nicky thinks Errol's given up
on him, desperate not to let it show.  White girl, white
baby, well.  White sergeant?  Jesus.

Rick's a drinker, a bigot, a line-dancer for heaven's
sake.  Fat and old and a really crap shag.  And
he clings to Nicky like a drowning man.

"I respect your choice," says Errol, forcing a smile.
Then hugs his happy nephew far too hard and retreats,
unable to pray.
