Cathy carries a lighter, even though she doesn't smoke. Hong Kong taught her
it's a useful tool when decisions must be made.

It's not that people confuse her. She's a good cop. Saying one thing, doing another,
that she understands. Motives are private. But some insist on an impossible
transparency. Why eludes her. She doesn't like that.

She prides herself on cutting through the smoke, finding the focus. One little
flick, a dulling patch of skin to go with all the others. Another bright point
in her mind, a direction, a choice. She thinks of Polly's eyes while she burns.
