No Sacrifice

Ramani stands a moment in the half-dark; steps onto slippery new-laid
tiles as the pair in the mirror take shape.

Prettier girls, prettier *women*, she thinks. Many. But hers is a
resilient grace, and I have - this in gentle wonderment - *something*,
yes, dear God, I remember this. Something, wilted by her partner when he
touched it, made it his. They loved, it died, he never noticed.

No more.

There need not be beginnings; Ramani leans into wet blonde hair, kisses
closed eyes as tired as her own. Never less lonely, her joy the echo of
a softly whispered 'fanks'.
