Bronski dreams sometimes that life is an Elmore Leonard novel,
fat with opportunity and coincidence. In these dreams, as in
life, Bernstein requires rescue. Happily tethered, whole and unaware
that he has entered dark waters, he waits. Wolfgang the man
breaks down doors, steals through rooms, leaves bonds taut and
blindfolds on and touches. He is anonymous, dizzied, safely away
from Guido's ecstatic response before his blundering colleagues arrive.
To return as Wolfgang the cop, who pantomimes lateness, stoically accepting
blame. Certain, as he bows his head, that he was invited. In Bronski's dreams,
his partner smiles secretly in welcome.
